Building a Platform for Campus Collaboration with Google

At UCSC, the Information Technology Services Division (ITS) delivered next-generation email and calendar systems to our campus by implementing Google Apps for Education - a single application approach for our entire campus population. Once Google Apps were fully installed and merged into one domain for faculty, staff and students, collaboration at UCSC has significantly improved. In addition, we have streamlined technical operations as now-obsolete services and hardware have been shut down. Timeline:

  • UCOP and Google contract signed June 2011
  • UCSC replaces their email system with Google Gmail for all faculty and staff on Nov. 14, 2011
  • UCSC moves students into the Google Gmail domain with faculty and staff on Feb. 22, 2012
  • UCSC turns on Google Sites and Google Groups in March 2012
  • UCSC replaces Oracle calendar with Google Calendar for all faculty, staff, and students on Aug. 6, 2012
  • UCSC turns on the rest of the Google Consumer Apps in September 2012
  • UCSC moves all campus mailing lists to Google Groups in September 2012
  • UCSC turns on Google+ and Hangouts in December 2012
  • UCSC retires legacy email system (CG Pro) in April 2013
